Her Early Life and School
Malika Sanders-Fortier was born in Selma, Alabama. She went to Spelman College. There, she earned a degree called a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. Later, she studied law at the Birmingham School of Law. She earned a law degree called a Juris Doctor.
Her Work and Public Service
After finishing college, Malika Sanders-Fortier went back to Selma. She became the leader of a group called the 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement. This group helps young people. She is also a member of the Alabama State Bar. This means she is a licensed lawyer in Alabama. She is also part of the Black Belt Lawyers Association.
In November 2018, Malika Sanders-Fortier was elected to the Alabama Senate. This is a part of the state government that makes laws. She took over the seat from her father, Henry Sanders. In 2021, she suggested a new law. This law would change the name of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.
Running for Governor
In January 2022, Malika Sanders-Fortier decided not to run again for her Senate seat. Instead, her father decided to run for his old seat. In the same month, Malika Sanders-Fortier decided to run for governor. She was a Democratic candidate. She made it to a second round of voting, called a runoff election. This happened on June 21, 2022. Yolanda Flowers won the nomination in that election.
