Mallingbar is a small Aboriginal community. It is located inside the town of Broome. Broome is in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

A Look Back: Mallingbar's History

The Mallingbar Aboriginal Corporation was officially started in 1987. It was set up at a place called Kennedy Hill. This spot is right by the Roebuck Bay shoreline.

Kennedy Hill is very important to the local Aboriginal people. There is a large "shell midden" next to the community. A shell midden is a pile of old shells and other remains. It shows that people have lived and gathered food there for a very long time.

The community has 11 houses. These homes were built in 1986. In 2014, four of these houses were taken down. They were no longer safe for people to live in.

How Mallingbar is Managed

The Mallingbar community is run by its own group. This group is called the Mallingbar Aboriginal Corporation. It was officially recognized on April 26, 1983.

This corporation helps the community make decisions. It follows rules from the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976. This law helps Aboriginal groups manage their own affairs.

Planning for Mallingbar's Future

Mallingbar has a special plan for its layout. It is called Mallingbar Layout Plan No.1. This plan helps decide where things like houses and roads should go.

The plan follows rules from State Planning Policy 3.2 Aboriginal Settlements. This policy helps make sure Aboriginal communities are planned well. The community agreed to the plan on January 10, 2005. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on January 17, 2005.
