Malú Urriola (born June 9, 1967 – died July 21, 2023) was a talented writer from Chile. Her full name was María de la Luz Urriola González. She was known for her beautiful poetry, her work as a screenwriter, and for teaching at a university.

Malú wrote six books of poetry. She won the important Pablo Neruda Award in 2006. She also wrote for popular TV shows like Los Venegas and La vida es una lotería.

Her Early Life and Studies

Malú Urriola was born in Santiago, Chile, on June 9, 1967. She started writing poems when she was just 14 years old. In 1986, she received a special scholarship. This scholarship was from a poetry workshop at the Pablo Neruda Foundation.

Later, Malú went to Madrid, Spain, to study. She earned a master's degree in scriptwriting there. She also taught at the Catholic University of Chile. She was a professor in the Faculty of Letters.

Becoming a Writer

Malú Urriola published her very first book when she was 21. It was called Piedras rodantes and came out in 1988. In 1994, she received a grant. This grant helped her publish another book, Dame tu sucio amor.

In 2002, Malú received another grant. This was for a special project with Nadia Prado. They called it Poesía es +: Lectura de poesía desde globos aerostáticos. It was an art project that took poetry outside. A plane flew over a park with a banner. It said, "And if the cage were always open." A balloon flew over a port with the words "The eyes are free." There was also a banner at the National Stadium that said "Memory."

Writing for TV and Theater

Besides poetry, Malú Urriola wrote many scripts. She wrote for movies, TV series, and soap operas. She was a writer for the TV shows Los Venegas and La vida es una lotería.

In 2004, she won an award for a TV script. It was for an episode called "Sofía (Una historia de maltrato a la Mujer)." This episode was part of the Cuentos de Mujeres series. She also wrote for other shows. These included The Sentimental Teaser (1999) and Los simuladores (2005–2006). She also wrote for Lola (2007–2008).

Malú also wrote plays for the theater. Some of her plays were El último beso (2001) and La noche del accidente (2011). Her poems were also included in many collections. These collections featured works by different poets.

Malú Urriola passed away on July 21, 2023, after a long illness.

Awards and Recognition

Malú Urriola received several important awards for her writing. In 2006, she won the prestigious Pablo Neruda Award. This is a very high honor for poets.

She also won awards from the Municipal de Santiago. In 2004, she received an award for her poetry collection Nada. This award was from the Consejo Nacional del Libro y la Lectura. In 2019, she was honored again. She received the Trayectoria Poética Pablo Neruda award. This recognized her long and successful career in poetry.
