Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mammoth Valley is a low area of land, like a big bowl, located in Southern Utah. It sits between the towns of Hatch and Duck Creek. A stream called Mammoth Creek flows right through the middle of the valley.

History of Mammoth Valley

Mammoth Valley has an interesting past. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a group of people had a special plan for the valley. They wanted to build a new community there. This community would be based on certain ideas about how people should live together.

A Planned Community

People who supported this project, including those who gave money to the Meadeau View Institute, were promised pieces of land in Mammoth Valley. Several families moved there and started to build homes. Some built temporary houses, while others brought in mobile homes.

Winter Challenges and Changes

However, the winter of 1993 brought a huge amount of snow to the valley. The snow was so heavy that it crushed many of the homes that weren't built very strongly. Because of this, the families who had hoped to create their community in Mammoth Valley decided to leave.

Official Orders

Later, on January 24, 1994, the Utah Division of Real Estate stepped in. This government office makes sure that land sales are done correctly and legally. They told the Meadeau View Institute to stop selling land in Mammoth Valley. This was because the way they were offering the land had not been properly registered with the state.
