Manuel Cano Tamayo was a famous Spanish flamenco guitarist. He was also a talented composer and a music teacher. He was born in Granada on February 23, 1925, and passed away in the same city on January 12, 1990.

Manuel Cano Tamayo's Life and Music
Early Life and Musical Start
Manuel grew up in a very musical family. His dad played the guitar, and his mom played the lute. When he was just seven years old, his grandfather gave him his first guitar!
To help his family, Manuel first studied something called "industrial surveying." This meant he started his career as a professional guitarist a bit later, in the late 1950s.
Becoming a Flamenco Master
Manuel became a professor of flamenco guitar. He won this special teaching job at the "Rafael Orozco" Music Conservatory in Córdoba. This allowed him to focus on teaching music and creating his own compositions.
He released about twenty music albums, which are like collections of songs. One of his most famous albums was Evocación de la guitarra de Ramón Montoya. This album even won an International Flamenco Record Award!
Touring and Awards
Manuel Cano Tamayo traveled all over Europe and Japan. He gave many concerts, and people loved his music. In 1965, he won the Sabicas Guitar Prize. This was a big award at the National Flamenco Art Contest in Córdoba.
In 1986, he wrote an important book called La guitarra, historia, estudio y aproximaciones al arte flamenco. This book is a key guide for anyone studying flamenco guitar. Because of his great work on the book, he won a research prize from the Chair of Flamencology of Jerez.
Important Recognition
Manuel was also a full member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Granada. He was also an advisor for UNESCO, which is a part of the United Nations.
After he passed away, in 1992, he received the Medal of Andalusia. This special award honored him as a "brilliant musician" and a "teacher for future generations." He was also recognized for his deep knowledge of Andalusian culture.
