Manuel Gómez-Moreno Martínez (born February 21, 1870, in Granada, Spain – died June 7, 1970, in Madrid, Spain) was a very important Spanish archaeologist and historian. He spent his life studying ancient buildings, art, and the history of Spain.
A Life of Discovery
Manuel Gómez-Moreno Martínez was born on February 21, 1870, in Granada, Spain. His father, Manuel Gómez-Moreno González, was a well-known painter. He was also an amateur archaeologist, meaning he enjoyed studying old things and places as a hobby. Manuel's mother was Dolores Martínez Almirón.
Exploring Spain's Past
Manuel Gómez-Moreno loved history and art from a young age. He became a dedicated archaeologist and historian. He wrote many books, almost 300 in total! Most of his writings focused on the archaeology and art history of Spain.
Early in the 1900s, he wrote a very important work. It was called Catálogo Monumental y artístico de España. This translates to Monumental and Artistic Catalog of Spain. This book helped people learn about many important historical sites and artworks across Spain.
Honored for His Work
Manuel Gómez-Moreno's hard work and discoveries were recognized around the world. Several universities gave him a special honor called Doctor honoris causa. This is a fancy title given to someone who has achieved great things, even if they didn't study at that university.
He received this honor from the University of Montevideo in Uruguay and the University of Oxford in England in 1941. Later, he was honored by the University of Glasgow in Scotland in 1951. Finally, in 1970, the University of Granada in Spain also gave him this special title. One of his students, José María de Azcárate, also became a famous art historian.
