Manuel García Prieto, 1st Marquis of Alhucemas (born November 5, 1859 – died March 8, 1938) was an important Spanish politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Spain many times during his career. He was also the 30th Solicitor General of Spain, which is a high legal position. Manuel García Prieto was a member of the Liberal Party. During his last time as prime minister, he was removed from power by Miguel Primo de Rivera.
About Manuel García Prieto
Manuel García Prieto was born on November 5, 1859, in a place called Astorga, which is in the province of León in Spain.
He trained to be a lawyer in the law firm of Eugenio Montero Ríos. Manuel García Prieto became part of Montero Ríos's political network and later married one of his daughters, María Victoria.
Political Career and Leadership
After Prime Minister José Canalejas was assassinated in 1912, the Liberal Party split into different groups. García Prieto led a group called the demócrata (meaning "democratic") minority. This group was a rival to the larger romanonista group.
During World War I, Manuel García Prieto, like Miguel Villanueva, believed that Spain should stay neutral. This means Spain should not take sides in the war. Because of this belief, the pro-ally Romanones had to resign as Prime Minister in 1917.
Manuel García Prieto passed away in San Sebastián on March 8, 1938.
