Manuel Milà i Fontanals (May 4, 1818 – July 16, 1884) was a famous Spanish expert in language and literature. He was born in Vilafranca del Penedès, a town near Barcelona, Spain. Manuel studied in Barcelona and later at the University of Cervera.

Early Life and Career

Manuel Milà i Fontanals became a professor of literature in 1845. He taught at the University of Barcelona. He kept this job until he passed away in 1884. For a long time, not many people outside the university knew about him.

In 1859, he became the president of the jocs florals in Barcelona. This was a special poetry contest. This role helped more people learn about his work.

Important Works

Manuel Milà i Fontanals wrote many important books. One of his most famous books was De Los trovadores en España. It was published in 1866. This book helped people understand his great knowledge.

Another important work was De la poesía heróico-popular castellana. This book came out in 1873. It showed other experts how good he was at scientific research. In 1876, he also helped bring attention to an old story called Curial e Güelfa.
