Why Was the University of Cervera Created?
A New Start in 1717
The university was started in 1717 by Philip V of Spain, who was the king. He wanted to reward the town of Cervera because it had supported him during a big conflict called the War of the Spanish Succession.
Changes for Other Universities
At the same time, King Philip V wanted to make changes for other parts of Catalonia. These areas had supported a different royal family, the Habsburgs. So, the king closed six other universities that were in Catalonia. Their teachers and students were moved to the new university in Cervera. This made the University of Cervera the main place for learning in Catalonia for a while.
When Did the University Close?
Over time, the university's importance slowly faded. By 1767, it was not as influential as it used to be. Finally, in 1835, the Royal and Pontifical University of Cervera closed its doors for good.
The University Building Today
The old building of the university is still standing in Cervera. It was designed by an architect named Francesc Soriano. Construction of the building took many years, from 1718 to 1740. On November 7, 1947, the Spanish government officially recognized the building as a very important cultural monument. It is now a protected historical site.
