Manuela Antonia Márquez García-Saavedra (born in 1844, died in 1890) was a talented Peruvian writer, poet, composer, and pianist. She was known as one of the most important poets of her time, around the 1870s. Manuela Márquez also wrote articles and created music for a play called La Novia del Colegial. Manuela Antonia Márquez García-Saavedra came from a family deeply involved in the arts. Her brothers, Luis and Arnaldo Márquez, were also famous Peruvian writers.
Manuela studied at the Colegio Sagrados Corazones Belén in Lima. She shared her poems and articles in different publications, such as El Correo de Perú, El Cosmorama, and La Alborada. Some of her poems were even included in special collections like Parnaso peruano (published in 1871) and Poetisas americanas (published in 1896). She wrote many poems over the years, which appeared in various magazines.
Besides her writing, Manuela Márquez was an excellent pianist. She also composed beautiful songs for singing and piano. One of her notable works was a dramatic zarzuela (a Spanish musical play) called La novia del colegial. Her brother, Arnaldo Márquez, composed the music for this play.
Manuela Márquez was the mother of another writer, Delia Castro Márquez. She was also the grandmother of the writer Serafina Quinteras.
