The Manufacturer's National Bank building is a really old and important building located at 145 Lisbon Street in Lewiston, Maine. It was built in 1914 and was the tallest business building in Lewiston for many years, until 1950. This building was one of the last big business places built in the city before World War I. It also stands out because of its special Classical Revival design, which looks like ancient Greek or Roman buildings. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
About This Historic Building
This amazing building is found in downtown Lewiston, right at the corner of Lisbon and Ash Streets. It stands seven stories tall, which means it has seven floors! The building faces Lisbon Street with three wide sections and Ash Street with eight sections. Since Ash Street goes downhill, you can even see the basement level from that side.
Its Unique Design
Most of the building is made of bright yellow bricks. However, the part facing Lisbon Street on the ground floor is made of smooth, light-colored limestone. This front part has three main sections, decorated with tall, flat columns that go up two floors. The windows on the sides and the top five floors are regular windows. The main entrance is set back in the middle section.
Between the second and third floors, there's a fancy decorative ledge that goes all around the building on both street sides. On the Ash Street side, the first two floors have tall, rounded windows. The basement level, which you can see from Ash Street, has storefronts. A decorative band separates the sixth and seventh floors, and the building has a flat roof with a projecting ledge at the very top.
A Look Back in Time
The Manufacturer's National Bank building was finished in 1914. It was designed by a famous architecture firm called Hutchins & French from Boston. Its style was very similar to other large office buildings being built in big cities like New York City and Chicago around that time.
The Manufacturer's National Bank itself started way back in 1875. Before moving into this grand building, it was located in another place called the Pilsbury Block. Today, this historic building is still used for different businesses and offices.
