Her Life and Education
María Concepción García Gainza was born in Pamplona, Spain, in 1937. She went to the University of Navarra to study. This is where she learned a lot about art history.
Starting Her Teaching Career
In 1962, she began teaching at the University of Navarra. She shared her knowledge with many students.
In 1970, she moved to the University of Seville. There, she became an associate professor. She was the first woman to take over a university teaching job from a man. She taught classes on modern art and Spanish Renaissance art. She worked there for five years.
In March 1975, she became a professor at the University of Murcia. However, she did not stay there for long. The next year, she returned to the University of Navarra. She worked there for 25 more years until she retired.
As a director of research, she helped with many projects. She guided about 50 research works. She also helped around 30 students with their doctoral studies.
Her Work in Art History
María Concepción García Gainza has done a lot of important work. She helped create the Catálogo monumental de Navarra. This huge project describes all the art and culture of Navarre. It took her and her team 20 years to complete. The work is published in nine large books.
She used to be the head of the Art History Department. Now, she leads the Navarro Heritage and Art Chair. She is an expert in Spanish Renaissance and Baroque art. These are art styles from the 16th to 18th centuries. She has given talks at many events in Spain and other countries. Her main research is about Italian and Spanish sculptures from these centuries.
