María Concepción García Gainza (born December 1, 1937) is a famous Spanish art historian, teacher, and writer. She is known for her deep knowledge of art. She used to be a Professor at the University of Navarre. She is also a special member of important art academies like the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

Life and Career

María Concepción García Gainza was born in Pamplona, Spain, in 1937. She studied at the University of Navarra.

Teaching and Research

In 1962, she started teaching at the University of Navarra. Later, in 1970, she became a professor at the University of Seville. This was a big step because she was the first woman to take over a university position from a man. At the University of Seville, she taught about Contemporary Art and Spanish Renaissance art.

In 1975, she became a professor at the University of Murcia. However, she soon returned to the University of Navarra in 1976. She worked there for 25 years until she retired. During her time, she was in charge of many research projects. She also guided about 30 students through their doctoral studies.

Important Works

María Concepción García Gainza directed and helped create a huge project called Catálogo monumental de Navarra. This work describes all the art and culture of the Navarre region in Spain. It took her and her team 20 years to complete this project. The catalog was published in nine large books.

She used to be the head of the Art History Department. She is now the Director of the Navarro Heritage and Art Chair. She is an expert in Spanish Renaissance and Baroque art. She has given many talks at art conferences both in Spain and other countries. Her main research focuses on Italian and Spanish sculptures from the 1500s to the 1700s.

She is now a Professor Emeritus at the University of Navarre. This means she is a retired professor who still holds an honored title. She is also a corresponding academic at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the Academy de Santa Isabel de Hungary in Seville.
