María Luisa Sepúlveda (born August 14, 1898 – died April 4, 1958) was a talented Chilean composer and music teacher. She wrote many pieces of music and also created books to help people learn music.

Her Life and Education

María Luisa Sepúlveda was born in a city called Chillán, in Chile. Her father, Bernardo Sepúlveda, was a professor who taught philosophy and languages at a school. Her mother, Maira Mercedes, was a poet.

María Luisa finished her high school studies at the Lyceum for Girls. After that, she went to the National Conservatory of Music. This was a special school where she learned how to play and create music.

Studying Music

At the Conservatory, María Luisa had many great teachers. She learned to play the piano with a teacher named Bindo Paoli. She also studied the violin with José Varalla. For more advanced music skills like harmony, counterpoint, and composition (which is about how to put music together), she learned from Luis Esteban Giarda and Domingo Brescia.

She earned her piano degree in 1905. Later, in 1918, she also got a degree in composition. This meant she was officially a skilled composer.

Teaching Career

After finishing her studies, María Luisa Sepúlveda became a piano teacher at the National Conservatory. She taught there until 1931.

Later, she moved on to teach at the Vocational School for Arts Education in Santiago. There, she taught about music harmony and Chilean folk music. She passed away in Santiago in 1958.

Her Musical Works

María Luisa Sepúlveda loved Chilean folk music. Many of her compositions were inspired by the traditional songs and sounds of her country. She also wrote books to help students learn music. For example, she wrote "Método de Guitarra" (Guitar Method) and "El amigo del niño" (The Child's Friend) for kids learning piano.

Here are some of her important musical works:

  • La Voz del Pasado (The Voice of the Past)
  • Cancionero Chileno (Chilean Songbook)
  • Estudio Sinfónico y Greca for orchestra (1932) – This was a large piece for a group of musicians.
  • Canción de las Corhuillas y Trutruka for orchestra (1940) – Another orchestral piece, possibly inspired by Chilean instruments.
  • Suite for chamber orchestra and piano (1940) – A set of musical pieces for a small orchestra and piano.
  • Seis Canciones Escolares for voice and piano (Six School Songs)
  • Ronda Primaveral for voice and piano (Spring Round)
  • Ronda de Paz for voice and piano (Round of Peace)
  • Dos Rondas, sobre poesías de Gabriela Mistral for voice and piano (Two Rounds, based on poems by Gabriela Mistral)
  • El Imposible y Tres Tonadas from folklore melodies (The Impossible and Three Folk Songs)
