María del Pilar Jiménez Alzate is a brilliant scientist from Colombia. She is a biological researcher who studies tiny living things. In 2000, she won a special award called the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science award. This award was for her amazing work on fungal infections, also known as mycoses. She was the very first Colombian scientist to receive this important international recognition!

Her Educational Journey

María del Pilar Jiménez started her studies in medicine. She attended CES University from 1989 to 1994. For her final project, she wrote about a disease called Hansen's disease.

Later, in 1997, she went to the University of Antioquia. There, she earned a Master's Degree in Biological Sciences. In 2004, she completed her PhD in Medical Sciences. This advanced degree was from the Pontifical Bolivarian University. After that, she continued her research at the University of Texas in San Antonio, USA.

Her Career as a Researcher

After her studies in Texas, Dr. Jiménez returned to Colombia. She worked at the San Pedro Claver Regional Hospital. This hospital is in a place called Nuquí, Chocó. She worked there until 1996.

In 1997, she joined the Corporation for Biological Research (CIB). She worked there as a researcher. In the early 2000s, she moved to the United States. She became a researcher at the University of California at San Diego. Later, she moved to Spain. There, she worked as a researcher at the University of Barcelona.

In 2008, she came back to Colombia. She joined the University of Antioquia in Medellín. She became a professor there, teaching about medical mycology. This is the study of fungal infections.

Her Important Research

Dr. Jiménez's research mainly focuses on mycoses. These are infections caused by fungi. She has studied Paracoccidioidomycosis a lot. This fungal infection is common in Central and South America. She also researched Coccidioidomycosis.

In 2000, she made history. She became the first Colombian scientist to win the L'Oréal-UNESCO international grant. This award was for Women in Science. It recognized her hard work in studying mycoses. She has also received other honors. In 1999, she won First Place in the Medical Area at the CIB. In 2000, she got a scholarship from a global mycology society. In 2017, her thesis was recognized as "Meritorious" by the University of Antioquia.
