Early Life and Music Journey
Marcel Gagnon was born in Prince George, British Columbia. He is a member of the Lheidli T'enneh Band. He grew up in a very large family, being the 16th of 20 children! From a young age, Marcel loved music. He played at dances, weddings, and private events across central British Columbia. He also performed on radio shows in Alberta and British Columbia.
Marcel faced some personal challenges that paused his music career for a while. However, he worked hard to overcome these difficulties. In 2001, he recorded his first major album, Crazy Maker, at the Banff Centre for the Arts. This album was a big success! It was even nominated for a Best Music of Aboriginal Canada award at the Juno Awards of 2002. Since then, he has released three more albums.
Helping Others and Community Work
In 1997, Marcel Gagnon earned a degree in counselling. He uses his experiences to help others. He became a member of the Board of Directors for the Whitecrow Village FASD Society when it started in 2002. This organization helps people affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
Marcel is also a strong supporter and helper for people who were affected by the Canadian Indian residential school system. These schools caused many difficulties for Indigenous children and their families in the past. Marcel works to support and heal those who experienced this system.
Today, Marcel is an elder of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation. He shares his knowledge about spirituality. He teaches that life involves a struggle between good and bad, or light and dark. He explains that we have a "Medicine Man within," which he calls Tsiyan or Grandfather. This inner strength helps us recognize and overcome negative influences, which he refers to as Bheni Hoolo.
Marcel Gagnon continues to work with Indigenous youth who are facing challenges with the law. He presents a special program called "Awakening the Medicine Man Within." Through this program, he shares his music and teachings to inspire and guide young people.
