Marcel Zadi Kessy (born in 1936 – died on October 13, 2020) was an important politician from Ivory Coast, a country in West Africa. He was known for his work in managing water and electricity companies. He also led important business groups in his country.

Early Life and Education

Marcel Zadi Kessy was born in 1936 in a place called Yacolidabouo. He went to school to study engineering, focusing on farming techniques. This means he learned how to design and build things related to agriculture.

Working with Water and Electricity

Kessy started his career working for the government in the Ministry of Agriculture. Later, he joined a state-owned farming company. In the early 1970s, he moved to the private sector. This means he started working for companies that were not owned by the government.

He joined SODECI, which was the first private company to distribute water in Africa. Ivory Coast had decided to let private companies manage its water supply back in 1959. Marcel Zadi Kessy became the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SODECI in 1985. A CEO is the top boss of a company.

In 1990, a new company called Compagnie Ivoirienne d'Electricité (CIE) was created to handle electricity. In June 2002, Kessy was chosen to be the CEO of CIE. He held this important role at the same time as being the CEO of SODECI.

Leading Business Groups

Besides his work with water and electricity companies, Marcel Zadi Kessy also led a big group for business owners. He was the President of the Conseil national du patronat ivoirien from 1993 to 1998. This group helps businesses in Ivory Coast work together and grow.

International Roles and Later Career

Marcel Zadi Kessy also had many important jobs on an international level. He helped start the African Water Association. He was also part of the board of directors for the International Water Association. This shows his influence in the water industry worldwide.

He held high positions in several other companies, including Ecobank, CIPREL, and Gras Savoye. He was also the chairman of the board for a company that sold bottled water, Société Africaine d'Eau Minérale. In 2009, he became the Managing Director of Eranove, another big company.

His last major role was serving as the President of the Economic and Social Council of Ivory Coast. He held this position from May 2011 to June 2016. This council gives advice to the government on important economic and social issues.

Awards and Honors

Marcel Zadi Kessy received several special awards for his achievements:

  • He was made a Grand Officer of the Ordre national de Côte d'Ivoire. This is one of the highest honors given by Ivory Coast.
  • He became a Knight of the Legion of Honour. This is a very famous award from France.
  • He received a Doctorate honoris causa from RUSTA. This is an honorary degree given by a university to recognize someone's great achievements, even if they didn't study there.
