Marcella Ann Hayes was born in 1956 in a town called Mexico, Missouri. She grew up in Centralia, Missouri, raised by her loving grandparents. Marcella was a bright student. She finished Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri, in 1974.
After high school, she went to the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1978, she earned her bachelor's degree in English. Marcella first thought about becoming a doctor, but her path soon changed. She joined the army in 1978. Today, she is married to Dennis Ng, and they have three children.
A Trailblazing Military Career
Marcella's journey into the military began during college. She joined the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) in her second year. This program helps college students train to become officers in the military. After graduating in 1978, she officially joined the U.S. Army.
Becoming the First African American Woman Pilot
On November 27, 1979, Marcella made history. At the U.S. Army Aviation Center in Fort Rucker, Alabama, she earned her wings. She became the first African American woman to qualify as a pilot in the United States Armed Forces. She was also the 55th woman overall to achieve this milestone.
