Marcelo Gonçalves Costa Lopes, known as Marcelo Gonçalves, is a former Brazilian football player. He was born on February 22, 1966, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Marcelo played as a central defender, which means he was a player who helped protect his team's goal. He was known for his long hair, which he famously cut during the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Playing for Clubs
Marcelo Gonçalves started his football journey with Flamengo in 1987. He became very well-known while playing for Botafogo. It was during his time at Botafogo that he was first chosen to play for the Brazilian national team.
Besides Flamengo and Botafogo, Marcelo also played for several other clubs. These included Santa Cruz, Cruzeiro, and Internacional in Brazil. He also played for a Mexican team called Tecos.
Winning Championships
Marcelo Gonçalves had a very successful career, winning many important titles with his clubs.
- With Botafogo, he won the Brazilian championship in 1995. He also helped them win the Carioca championship twice, in 1990 and 1997. In 1998, they won the Rio-São Paulo championship.
- With Tecos (a team from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico), he won the Mexican championship in 1994. The team also won the CONCACAF Cup Winners' Cup in 1995.
In 1997, Marcelo scored the winning goal for Botafogo in a 1–0 match against Vasco da Gama. This was in the final of the Taça Guanabara tournament. He also played for Cruzeiro in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup final, where they lost to the German team Borussia Dortmund.
Playing for Brazil
Marcelo Gonçalves also had a great international career playing for the Brazil national team.
- In 1997, he helped Brazil win the Copa América, which is a major football tournament for South American teams.
- In the same year, Brazil also won the Confederations Cup.
- He was part of Brazil's team for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Brazil reached the final of this tournament. Marcelo played in two matches during the World Cup, against Norway and Chile.

Life After Football
After he stopped playing professional football, Marcelo Gonçalves continued to be involved in the sport. He is currently the executive director of Estácio de Sá, which is a football club in Rio de Janeiro.
