Maredudd ab Ieuan ap Robert facts for kids
Maredudd ab Ieuan ab Robert (died 1525) was an important Welsh gentleman who owned a lot of land. He is also known as Maredudd ap Ieuan or Maredudd ab Ifan. He took over from his father, Ieuan ap Robert ap Maredudd, who passed away in 1468. Maredudd was a very important ancestor of Sir John Wynn, 1st Baronet, a well-known figure in Welsh history.
One of Maredudd's biggest achievements was buying and rebuilding Gwydyr Castle. This castle had been destroyed around the 1460s, but Maredudd brought it back to life and made it the main home for his family.
Building His Influence
Maredudd was smart about how he managed his land and family. He wanted to avoid getting caught up in arguments or fights between his relatives in a place called Eifionydd.
Acquiring Castles
To keep his family safe and grow his power, Maredudd made some important purchases:
- Around 1489, he rented Dolwyddelan Castle. This gave him a strong base away from family disputes.
- He also built a new place called Penamnen.
- Finally, around 1500, he bought Gwydyr (the land where Gwydyr Castle stood) from Dafydd ap Hywel Coetmor. This made Gwydyr Castle the true heart of his family's lands.
Maredudd's Family Life
Maredudd ab Ieuan had a large family. He was married three times and had many children.
His Marriages and Children
- His first wife was Alice. She was the daughter of Gwilym ap Gruffudd ap Robin. With Alice, Maredudd had four sons: John Wyn ap Maredudd (who later took over from him), Rhys Wyn, William Wyn, and Rhydderch. They also had six daughters.
- His second wife was Gwenhwyfar, the daughter of Gruffudd ap Hywel. They had one daughter named Elsbeth.
- His third wife was Margaret, the daughter of Morus ap John. With Margaret, Maredudd had two sons, Humphry Wyn and Cadwaladr, and seven daughters.
