Margaret Burges (born around 1579 – died January 1629) was a Scottish businesswoman. She lived in Nether Cramond and was also known as 'Lady Dalyell'. In 1629, she was accused of a crime called witchcraft and faced a trial in Edinburgh.

Margaret Burges was married twice. Her first husband was a boatman named John Gillespie. Later, she married John Dalyell. Margaret was a successful person in business in Cramond. She owned properties and rented them out to people. She also had several servants working for her.
The Witchcraft Accusation
Margaret Burges was first accused of witchcraft after an argument near her home. She had sent away a beggar named Elspeth Baird. In return, Elspeth Baird accused Margaret of witchcraft.
Margaret tried to clear her name by filing a lawsuit. This lawsuit was meant to show that the accusation was false. However, this attempt did not go as planned. Instead, it led to a formal investigation against her.
The Trial and Its Outcome
During the investigation, a local church group called the Cramond Kirk Session looked into the claims. They decided there was enough information to send the case to a higher authority, the Privy Council.
Margaret Burges had a trial on January 27, 1629. At that time, people believed in witchcraft and trials like hers were common. Sadly, Margaret Burges was found guilty. She died in Edinburgh on Castle Hill.
