Margaret of Prades facts for kids
Margaret of Prades (born between 1388 and 1395 – died 23 July 1429) was a queen. She became the Queen of Aragon when she married King Martin of Aragon.
Her Early Life
Margaret was the daughter of Peter of Aragon. He was known as the Baron of Entenza. Her mother was Joana of Cabrera.
Marriage to King Martin
On 17 September 1409, Margaret married King Martin of Catalonia-Aragon. He was a distant cousin of her father. Margaret was around 14 years old at the time. King Martin was 53.
King Martin had lost all his children from his first marriage. He needed an heir to take over the kingdom after him. Sadly, King Martin died on 31 March 1410. This was only six months after he married Margaret. They did not have any children together.
The Interregnum
King Martin's death caused a big problem. There was no clear ruler for two years. This period without a king is called an interregnum.
The problem was solved by something called the Pact of Caspe. This was an agreement made in 1412. It decided who would be the next king. Ferdinand I of Aragon was chosen. He was the younger son of King Martin's sister, Eleanor.
Later Life
Margaret stayed a widow for about four years after King Martin died. In 1415, she married her second husband, John of Vilaragut.
In 1416, Margaret had a son in secret. His name was Joan Jeroni de Vilaragut. John of Vilaragut died in 1422. After his death, Margaret went to live in a monastery called Bonrepòs. She passed away in 1429.
