Margarita Pisano Fischer (born October 28, 1932 – died June 9, 2015) was an important Chilean architect, writer, and thinker. She was also a strong advocate for women's rights, known as a feminist. She belonged to a group called the "Rebel Movement of the Outside."

Margarita Pisano's Life and Ideas

Margarita Pisano Fischer was born in Punta Arenas, Chile, on October 28, 1932. She helped start several important groups. These included La Casa de la Mujer La Morada (The Women's House La Morada) and Radio Tierra. She also co-founded the Movimiento Feminista Autónomo (Autonomous Feminist Movement).

Fighting for Change in Chile

Margarita was a founder of the Movimiento Feminista (Feminist Movement). This group stood against the military rule of Augusto Pinochet. They had a famous saying: "Democracy in the country, in the house and in the bed." Margarita and Julieta Kirkwood helped make this phrase popular. It meant they wanted freedom and fairness everywhere.

New Ways of Thinking About Feminism

Margarita Pisano, like Francesca Gargallo, explored ideas about gender. Gender studies look at how society defines and treats people based on their gender. Margarita's approach was feminist, meaning she focused on equality for women. However, she had different ideas from some traditional feminists.

She believed that some feminist ideas, which she called "patriarchal feminism," were too focused on politics. She felt they didn't always help women gain true freedom. She also worried about the feminist movement becoming too formal or "institutionalized." She wanted the movement to stay independent and true to its original goals.

The "Cómplices" Group

In 1993, Margarita Pisano helped create a feminist group called "Cómplices" (Accomplices). Other members included Edda Gaviola, Sandra Lidid, Ximena Bedregal, Rosa Rojas, Francesca Gargallo, and Amalia Fischer. This group wanted people to recognize that there were many different ways to think about feminism. They believed that feminists could have different ideas and still work together.

The "Cómplices" group first appeared at a big feminist meeting in El Salvador in 1993. Ximena Bedregal, a member, explained that they wanted to show that different types of feminism existed. They emphasized the importance of independence and creating a feminist space where different voices were heard. Margarita Pisano passed away in Santiago, Chile, on June 9, 2015.
