Margery Beddingfield facts for kids
Margery Beddingfield (also known as Margaret Beddingfield) (1742–1763) was a British woman who faced serious consequences for a crime in 1763.
Early Life and Family
Margery was the daughter of farmer John Rowe and his wife, also named Margery. She was born in 1742 and baptized on June 29 in the Blaxhall church.
On July 3, 1759, Margery married John Beddingfield, who was also a farmer. They had two children together: a daughter named Pleasance and a son named John. Sadly, their son John passed away when he was only four months old.
A Difficult Situation
About four years into her marriage, Margery became involved with Richard Ringe, one of the house servants. A serious incident occurred involving her husband, John Beddingfield, and Richard Ringe.
On the night of July 27, 1762, John Beddingfield died under suspicious circumstances. An investigation was quickly started to find out what happened.
Investigation and Consequences
The investigation into John Beddingfield's death showed that it was not natural. Both Richard Ringe and Margery were brought to trial.
Richard Ringe admitted what he had done. Margery also eventually shared her confession. Because John Beddingfield was Ringe's employer and Margery's husband, their actions were considered very serious crimes at the time.
Margery Beddingfield and Richard Ringe faced justice for their actions. They were punished in Ipswich on April 8, 1763, in front of many people.
