Margery Golding (born around 1526, died 1568) was an important lady in English history. She became the Countess of Oxford by marrying John de Vere, 16th Earl of Oxford. Margery was also the mother of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford. He later became a famous writer. Her half-brother, Arthur Golding, was a well-known translator.

Margery Golding's Early Life

Margery Golding was born around 1526. Her birthplace was Belchamp St Paul in England. She was the third child and first daughter of Sir John Golding. Her mother was Elizabeth Tonge.

Sadly, Margery's mother passed away in 1527. Her father then married Ursula Marston. Margery gained seven younger half-siblings from this marriage. One of her half-brothers was Arthur Golding. He became a famous translator of old Latin books.

Becoming the Countess of Oxford

On August 1, 1548, Margery married John de Vere, 16th Earl of Oxford. Their wedding took place in Belchamp St Paul. John de Vere was a very important nobleman in England.

Margery and John had two children together. Their son was Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford. He later became a well-known figure in English history. Their daughter was Mary de Vere.
