Margot Taulé: A Pioneer in Architecture and Engineering
Margot Taulé was a groundbreaking woman who helped design many important buildings and taught future generations of architects and engineers. Her work left a lasting mark on her country.
Early Life and Education Journey
Margot Taulé was one of two daughters born to parents who had moved from France. She started her studies in 1940 at the Universidad de Santo Domingo, which is now known as the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. She focused on Civil Engineering and Architecture. By 1948, she had earned her university degree in both fields.
Designing Important Buildings
Margot Taulé was responsible for designing the strong structure of the building where the Dominican National Congress meets. This important building was ordered by the country's leader, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, in the 1960s. It is still used today for government meetings.
She also worked as a structural engineer with other famous Dominican architects. Some of these architects included Henry Gazón, Guillermo Gonzales, Leo Pou, and José A. Caro. She helped make sure their building designs were strong and safe.
Shaping Future Architects and Engineers
Margot Taulé also made a huge difference in how engineering and architecture were taught in the Dominican Republic. In 1956, she became a full professor at the University of Santo Domingo after a special competition. She held this teaching position until 1964.
In 1966, a group of professors and thinkers, who were not happy with how the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo was being run, decided to start a new university. This new university was called the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Urena (UNPHU). Margot Taulé was one of the founding professors and a member of the main leadership group that helped create it.
At UNPHU, she taught in the civil engineering, architecture, and mathematics departments. She also held important leadership roles. At different times, she was the head of the Architecture department and the head of the Engineering department. In 2003, she was chosen by the university's board to be the President of the university, a position she held until 2005. In 1985, UNPHU honored her with the title of Distinguished Professor, recognizing her amazing contributions to teaching engineering and architecture.
