Mariam bint Abu Ya'qub Ashshilbi was an amazing poet from the 8th century. She wrote in the Arabic language and lived in a place called al-Andalus, which is now part of Spain and Portugal. Mariam was born in a town called Shilb, which today is known as Silves, Portugal. Later, she moved to Seville, where she became a teacher for important noblewomen.

Who Was Mariam Ashshilbi?

Mariam lived during a time when the Moors ruled parts of Spain. The Moors were people from North Africa who brought their culture and knowledge to Europe. During this period, many women in the Andalusian area were very interested in arts like poetry and music. Mariam was so talented that some people called her the "Arabian Sappho" after a famous ancient Greek poet.

Mariam's Lasting Legacy

Even though she lived a long time ago, some of Mariam's poems and writings are still around today! You can find well-preserved examples of her work in the library of the Escorial, a famous historical building in Spain. Her work helps us understand more about the culture and art of al-Andalus during the 8th century.
