Early Life and Talent

Martha Frances Caroline Poole was born into a large family around the 1770s. Her father, William, quickly noticed her special gift for music. She was good at singing and also played the harpsichord, an old musical instrument.

Maria Dickons trained with a well-known teacher named Venanzio Rauzzini. She performed in one of his operas, La vestale, in 1787. This was at the King's Theatre and later at Vauxhall Gardens.

A Star on Stage

By the time she got married in 1800, Maria had already performed in many cities. She sang in Dublin, Edinburgh, and at Covent Garden in London. Her early career showed she was a rising star in the opera world.

Challenges and Triumphs

After her marriage, Maria had to return to the stage in 1807. This was because her husband's business was not doing well. She and her husband later separated in 1810.

From 1807 to 1815, Maria performed in many top venues in London. She also traveled to Paris and Italy to sing. While her trips abroad had mixed results, she used her time wisely. She collected many volumes of Italian vocal music. She brought this valuable collection back to Britain.

Later Career and Legacy

Maria Dickons returned to Covent Garden in 1818 and 1819. She worked with the composer Henry Bishop on his popular operas. After these performances, she decided to retire from the stage once more.

Maria Dickons passed away at her home in Regent Street, London, in 1833. She is remembered as an important opera singer of her time.
