Maria Elizabeth van Ebbenhorst Tengbergen (born July 11, 1885 – died July 16, 1980) was a talented Dutch musician. She was a composer, meaning she wrote music. She also wrote lyrics for songs, played the organ, and taught music.

Early Life and Learning

Maria was born in a Dutch city called Hoorn. Her parents were Susanna Maria Gerlings and Hendrik Johan van Ebbenhorst Tengbergen. Her father worked for the government. Maria's first music teacher was her aunt, Maria Elizabeth Gerlings. Her aunt was an organist, just like Maria would become. Maria went to music schools in Leiden and Amsterdam. She learned from many great teachers there. Some of her teachers were Jean Baptiste de Paux and Sem Dresden.

Her Work and Legacy

Maria worked as a music teacher and also played the organ. She often wrote both the music and the words for her songs. One of her students was Macario Santiago Kastner. He became a famous British music expert. A Dutch artist named Engelien Reitsma-Valença made a picture of Maria. It shows Maria playing the piano in 1921. This artwork is now kept in the Rijksmuseum. Maria also wrote letters to Jeanne Gabriëlle van Schaik-Willing. She was a well-known writer and theater critic. Today, Maria's important papers are kept safe. They are stored in the Netherlands Music Institute.
