Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Maria Teresa Nunes Padilha de Castro Correia de Barros is a smart Portuguese engineer. She works with electricity, especially big power systems. She studies how electricity moves and how to make sure it's good quality. She also looks at sudden changes, called "transients," in power systems. She teaches engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico, which is part of the University of Lisbon.

Her Journey in Engineering

Maria Teresa Correia de Barros studied electrical engineering. She got her first degree in 1974. This was at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Portugal. She continued her studies there. She earned her doctorate degree in 1985. Later, in 1995, she completed her "habilitation." This is a special qualification. It means she is highly skilled in her field. It allows her to teach at the highest levels.

Leading the Way

Correia de Barros took on many important roles. From 1989 to 1991, she led the Power Systems Division. This was at her university, Instituto Superior Técnico. From 1990 to 2001, she was in charge of the Instituto da Energia (INTERG). This is an energy institute. She also led the Energy Commission. This was for the Portuguese National Research Agency. She did this from 1991 to 1994.

From 1999 to 2001, she was a pro-rector. This is a senior leader. She worked at the Technical University of Lisbon. From 2001 to 2009, she worked for Energias de Portugal. This is a big energy company. She also led the National Electrical Engineering Council. This was for the Portuguese National Engineers Association. She held this role from 2004 to 2007. She has also visited and worked at many international places.

Starting a Conference

In 1993, Maria Teresa Correia de Barros started something new. She founded a special meeting. It is called the International Conference on Power Systems Transients. This conference happens every two years. It brings together experts. They talk about sudden changes in power systems.

Awards and Honors

Maria Teresa Correia de Barros has received many awards. These awards recognize her important work.

IEEE Fellow

In 2000, she became a Fellow of the IEEE. This is a very high honor. It means she is recognized for her big contributions. She helped improve how we understand and analyze power systems. Especially how they handle sudden changes.

Other Recognitions

In 2002, she became a Fellow (Membro Conselheiro) of Ordem dos Engenheiros. This is the Portuguese National Engineers Association. In 2008, she received an award. It was from the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE). This award was for her work on system performance. In 2014, she won another award. It was from the International Conference on Lightning Protection. This shows her important work in many areas of electrical engineering.
