Meet Hedvig Maria Tesch (1850–1936)! She was a super talented professional photographer from Sweden. She had her own photo studio in the city of Linköping. Because of her amazing and successful work, thousands of her old photographs are still kept safe. You can find them in local museums and libraries today!
Maria Tesch's Story
Maria Tesch was born in a town called Eksjö in 1850. In 1873, she moved to Linköping. There, she opened her very own photo studio. It was on a busy corner of Drottninggatan and Nygatan streets.
A Thriving Business
Her studio became very popular! It was so successful that just a few years later, Maria bought the building. People from Linköping and nearby areas came to her for portraits. Many of these old photos are still treasured in family albums today.
Maria was a very hard worker. She was able to make her studio even bigger. She also hired several employees to help her. She even opened another branch of her studio in Eksjö!
Her Secret to Great Photos
Maria had a special trick to get people to smile for their pictures. Before she went behind her camera's black curtain, she would shout, "Look happy, think of the one who's going to get the photograph!" This often made people laugh and smile naturally.
Maria ran her Linköping studio until 1917. After that, she handed it over to another photographer named Anna Göransson.
Her Legacy
Maria Tesch passed away on April 5, 1936. She had built up a lot of money from her successful business. She decided to leave her fortune to help others. She gave money to the Linköping Association for the Aged. This group helps older people in Linköping. She also gave money to charities in Eksjö.
Today, thousands of her photographs are kept safe. You can see them at the local library and the Östergötland County Museum. Some of her old photography equipment is also on display there!
