Marian Otis Chandler (born July 1, 1866 – died August 9, 1952) was an important businesswoman. She worked as the secretary and a director for the Times-Mirror Company, which was famous for publishing the Los Angeles Times newspaper. She was also known for her generous donations to many causes.

Her Life Story
Early Life
Marian Otis Chandler was born Emma Marian Otis on July 1, 1866, in Marietta, Ohio. Her parents were Harrison Gray Otis (publisher) and Eliza Ann Wetherby. Marian had three sisters named Mabel, Lilian, and Esther. She also had a brother named Harrison Gray.
Family Life
In 1894, Marian married Harry Chandler. Harry later became the publisher of the Los Angeles Times newspaper. Marian and Harry raised eight children together. Two of these children, Francesca and Alice May, were from Harry's first marriage. They also had six children of their own: Constance, Ruth, Norman, Harrison Gray Otis, and twins Helen and Philip.
Their son, Norman Chandler (1899–1973), later took over as the publisher of the Times after his father passed away.
Business and Charity Work
After her husband, Harry, died in 1944, Marian stepped down from her role as secretary. However, just one month later, she was chosen to be the chairman of the Times-Mirror company board. She also held important positions as vice president of Chandis Securities Company, Southwest Land Company, and Southwest Company.
Marian Otis Chandler was well-known for her many acts of kindness and her generous donations to different charities and causes.
Later Years and Legacy
Marian died on August 9, 1952, at her home in Los Angeles, California. She was buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California. She was survived by seven of her children: Alice May, Constance, Helen, Ruth, Norman Chandler, Philip Chandler, and Harrison Chandler. Her sister, Mabel Otis Booth, also survived her.
Her Legacy
- The community of Reseda, California, was first named Marian, in honor of Mrs. Chandler.
- A large cargo ship, built in 1917, was bought by the Los Angeles Steamship Company in 1929. It was renamed the Marian Otis Chandler. The ship kept this name until it was sold again in 1939.
