Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mariano Pardo de Figueroa (born November 18, 1828 – died December 11, 1918) was a Spanish nobleman who loved collecting stamps. He was so important in the world of stamp collecting that he was known as one of the "Fathers of Philately" (that's the fancy word for stamp collecting!). He used a special pen name, Dr. Thebussem, when he wrote about his hobbies.

Who Was Dr. Thebussem?

Mariano Pardo de Figueroa was a very respected person in the world of stamp collecting. He was chosen to be part of a very important group called the Philatelic Society, London in 1870. This group is now known as the Royal Philatelic Society London. He later became an "Honorary Member" in 1875, which was a big deal and showed how much they valued his work.

The "Honorary Postman"

Mariano Pardo de Figueroa was given a special title: "Honorary Postman of Spain and her Possessions." This was because he helped make important changes to how mail was handled in Spain. For his amazing work, he was even allowed to send his mail for free! This shows how much his country appreciated his efforts to improve the postal service.

What Does "Thebussem" Mean?

Mariano Pardo de Figueroa chose the pen name "Thebussem" in a clever way. He took the Spanish word "embustes," which means "lies" or "tall tales," and rearranged its letters. Then he added an "H" and an "S" to make it sound a bit German. It was a playful way to sign his writings.

A Friend's Support

Another famous Spanish writer, Dionisio Pérez Gutiérrez, admired Mariano Pardo de Figueroa so much that he decided to use the pen name "Post-Thebussem." This was his way of showing support and respect for Dr. Thebussem's work and ideas.
