Later, he moved to the University of Chicago in the United States. He was a research fellow in the Department of Microbiology from 1959 to 1961. He then became an associate professor and later a full professor of parasitology. He worked at the University of Chicago from 1967 until 1986. His work there helped train many new scientists. He was also a member of the National Research Council of the Philippines from 1957 to 1973.
