A Musician in Royal France
Marie-Elizabeth Cléry was born in 1761. Her birth name was Du Verger or Du Verge. She grew up to be a very skilled harpist. A harp is a large musical instrument with many strings. She became famous enough to play music for the royal family. She was part of the court of Queen Marie-Antoinette. The "court" was like a group of people who lived and worked with the Queen.
Her Musical Creations
After she married Jean-Baptiste Cléry, Marie-Elizabeth started publishing her own music. In 1785, she released three special pieces of music. These were called Trois Sonates pour La Harpe ou Piano-forte avec Accompagnement de Violon. A sonata is a type of musical piece, often for one or two instruments. Her sonatas were written for the harp or a piano, and they also had a part for the violin.

- Sonata 1 was in C major.
- Sonata 2 was in E♭ major.
- Sonata 3 was in B♭ major.
