When she came back to Oslo, she opened her own medical office.

Early Life and Education

Marie Spångberg was born in 1865. Her father was a watchmaker, and her family was not wealthy. After her father passed away, her mother worked hard as a widow to support the family. Despite these challenges, Marie was determined to get a good education. She worked very hard in her studies.

In 1893, Marie made history by graduating from the Royal Frederiks University. This made her the very first woman to become a doctor in Norway. It was a huge step forward for women in medicine!

Her Career as a Doctor

After becoming a doctor, Marie Spångberg wanted to specialize in important areas of medicine. She went to Germany to study obstetrics and gynecology. These fields focus on helping women, especially during pregnancy and childbirth.

When she returned to Oslo, she started her own medical practice. This meant she had her own office where she could see patients. She helped many people with their health.

Family Life and Later Work

Marie Spångberg later married Søren Holth, who was an ophthalmologist (an eye doctor). They had five daughters together. However, she faced personal sadness when two of her daughters passed away at a young age. After these difficult times, she decided to stop her private medical practice.

Even though she closed her private office, Marie continued to work in healthcare. She served on the Healthcare Commission until 1920. This commission likely helped make important decisions about public health. She had to stop working in 1920 due to her own health issues. Marie Spångberg passed away on her birthday in 1942.
