Marie Jakobaea of Baden-Sponheim (born June 25, 1507 – died November 16, 1580) was an important German noblewoman. She became the Duchess of Bavaria when she married Duke William IV. Her life was part of a time when royal families played a big role in shaping Europe.
Marie Jakobaea's Early Life
Marie Jakobaea was born on June 25, 1507. Her father was Philip I, who was the Margrave of Baden. A Margrave was a type of ruler, similar to a count, in a border region. Her mother was Countess Elisabeth. Elisabeth was the daughter of Philip, who was an Elector Palatine. An Elector Palatine was a powerful prince who had the right to choose the Holy Roman Emperor.
Her Family Background
Marie's family was well-connected among the European nobility. Her grandparents on her father's side were Christopher I, Margrave of Baden-Baden, and Ottilie of Katzenelnbogen. This shows that Marie came from a long line of important rulers and noble families.
Marriage and Children
On October 5, 1522, Marie Jakobaea married William IV, Duke of Bavaria. William was born in 1493 and passed away in 1550. He was the oldest son of Duke Albert IV and his wife Kunigunde of Austria. Their marriage was important for connecting two powerful noble families.
