Marieme Faye Sall, also known as Marème Faye Sall, was the First Lady of Senegal from 2012 to 2024. She is married to Macky Sall, who was the President of Senegal. She was special because she was the first First Lady of Senegal who was fully Senegalese by birth and family background. The First Ladies before her were either French or partly Lebanese.
Early Life and Education
Marieme Faye Sall was born in Saint-Louis, Senegal. She was the fourth of eight children in her family. Her family background includes both Fula and Serer heritage.
She went to primary school in Saint-Louis. Later, her family moved to Diourbel, a city in central Senegal. She finished high school there with a technical degree.
She then started studying electrical engineering at the Higher Institute of Technology. This institute is part of Cheikh Anta Diop University. However, she left the university after her first child was born.
Family Life
Marieme Faye Sall met Macky Sall in 1992 when she was still in high school. She married him in 1995. After getting married and having her first child, she left her studies at Cheikh Anta Diop University. The couple has three children together.
Role in Politics
During her husband's presidential campaign in 2012, Marieme Faye Sall was a close advisor and supporter. She helped him a lot, even though she was not involved in the daily plans of his political party, the Alliance for the Republic.
Macky Sall won the election on March 25, 2012. He became president, and Marieme Faye Sall became the First Lady.
As First Lady of Senegal
Marieme Faye Sall became the fourth First Lady of Senegal on April 2, 2012. She was the first Black First Lady of Senegal. She was also the first Muslim First Lady. Many people in Senegal called her a "real Senegalese lady."
The First Ladies before her had different backgrounds. Senegal's first and third First Ladies, Colette Senghor and Viviane Wade, were both from France. Another former First Lady, Elizabeth Diouf, had a Lebanese father and a Senegalese mother.
During her time as First Lady, Marieme Faye Sall started the Serve Senegal Foundation. This is a charity organization, and she was in charge of its board of directors.
