Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is an exciting role-playing game (RPG) for the Nintendo DS handheld console. It's the second game in the popular Mario & Luigi RPG series, following Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. This game was released in North America on November 28, 2005, in Japan on December 29, 2005, and in Europe on January 27, 2006.

The story begins when Princess Peach travels into the past using a special time machine. However, she doesn't return! Instead, a strange green alien creature comes out of the machine. After this alien is defeated, Mario and Luigi must journey through time to find Princess Peach and stop a new alien threat.

What is Partners in Time?

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time combines adventure, puzzles, and turn-based battles. Players control both the adult Mario and Luigi, and their baby versions, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. This unique feature allows for fun new ways to explore and fight enemies. The game is known for its funny dialogue and charming characters.

The Story Begins

The adventure starts in the present-day Mushroom Kingdom. Professor E. Gadd shows off his new time machine. Princess Peach decides to take it for a test ride, but something goes wrong. The machine returns damaged, and a scary alien called a Shroob comes out. This alien is quickly defeated, but it's clear that something terrible has happened in the past.

Mario and Luigi discover a time hole and decide to jump in to find Peach. They end up in the past Mushroom Kingdom, which is being invaded by the evil Shroobs. These aliens are trying to take over the world!

Meeting the Baby Brothers

In the past, Mario and Luigi meet their younger selves, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. The four heroes must team up to fight the Shroobs. The game uses both screens of the Nintendo DS: the adult brothers are usually on the bottom screen, and the baby brothers are on the top. Players control both pairs, often at the same time, to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.

Gameplay and Battles

The gameplay in Partners in Time is a mix of exploration and battles. As an RPG, characters gain experience points and level up, becoming stronger. In battles, players use timed button presses to make their attacks more powerful or to dodge enemy attacks. This makes battles exciting and interactive.

  • Controlling Four Characters: You use the A, B, X, and Y buttons to control each character. For example, A controls Mario, B controls Luigi, X controls Baby Mario, and Y controls Baby Luigi.
  • Bros. Attacks: The brothers can team up for special attacks that deal a lot of damage. These attacks often involve quick reflexes and precise timing.
  • Time Travel: The game involves traveling between the past and present. Actions in the past can affect the present, leading to interesting puzzles and story developments.

The Shroob Invasion

The main enemies in the game are the Shroobs, a race of mushroom-like aliens. They are led by Princess Shroob, who is very powerful and determined to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom. The game's story unfolds as Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi try to stop the Shroobs and rescue Princess Peach. They visit many different areas in the past, each with its own challenges and unique Shroob enemies.

Why is it Fun?

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is loved by fans for its:

  • Humor: The game has many funny moments and witty dialogue.
  • Unique Gameplay: Controlling four characters at once is a fresh and engaging experience.
  • Challenging Puzzles: Many puzzles require using the abilities of both the adult and baby brothers.
