Mario Roques (born July 1, 1875 – died March 8, 1961) was a famous French expert in languages and old literature. He was a professor who studied the history of medieval literature and was known as a Romance philologist. This means he studied the languages that came from Latin, like French, Spanish, and Italian. He also helped translate and edit a famous old story called Le Roman de Renart.
About Mario Roques
Mario Roques was born in Callao, Peru. His father worked there for the French government. Mario started his studies in 1894 at a top school in France called the École Normale Supérieure (ENS). At the same time, he also attended classes at another important school, the École nationale des chartes.
In 1895, he joined the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE). Here, he learned about Romance philology from famous teachers like Gaston Paris and Antoine Thomas. He started teaching very early in his career. He taught at many important places, including the ENS and the EPHE, where he later took over from Gaston Paris.
He also taught at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales. Here, he taught Romanian and Albanian languages. He even became the director of this institute in 1936. Mario Roques also taught at the Sorbonne and the Collège de France, which are very respected universities.
His Work and Contributions
In 1910, Mario Roques started a special collection of books called "Les classiques français du Moyen âge" (French Classics of the Middle Ages). These books were published by Honoré Champion.
The next year, in 1911, he took over from Paul Meyer as the head of a very important journal called Romania. This journal was all about the study of Romance languages and literature. Mario Roques managed Romania until he passed away.
