Marion Carll Property aka Marion Carll Farm is a historic home and property located in Commack, Suffolk County, New York. It consists of the 1860 farmhouse, privy, garage, smoke house, milk house, horse barn/carriage house, sheep barn, and four smaller barns. Marion Carll left the home and property to the Commack UFSD.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
The majority of the Farm was leased by Long Island University for a Veterinary School in June 2019. Long Island University's plan calls for the restoration of portions of the site to be used as to serve as a campus for their new College of Veterinary Medicine, which will be the New York metropolitan area’s first veterinary school; and Long Island University will use the site as an educational farm allowing college and Commack students to study farm animals; explore careers in the area of agriculture, and engage in other explorations associated with the running of a farm including bee keeping.
In addition, Long Island University made the following commitments:
Engage in a renovation plan estimated in excess of $1,000,000 to address the following areas:
o One Room School House: Restore the one-room school house in full for use as an educational facility by LIU and the CUFSD;
o Large Barn and Other Outbuildings: Repair/restore other outbuildings onsite in accordance with the Farm’s status on the National Registry of Historic Places;
o Fencing: Install, and strengthen as necessary for farm animals and aesthetics, fencing on the property;
o Parking: Install a driveway and parking lot in a manner agreed to with the District;
o Grounds: Prune and/or remove overgrown brush, shrubbery and trees as necessary on the entire property; and
o Other:
LIU will include other projects in support of our continued efforts to restore the farm such as the installation of fencing at the District’s request to help segregate the main house and related fields, and the construction of a security sub-station (manned by district security), etc.
Agree to assume all maintenance and upkeep on the entire 9 acre site, with the exception of the historic manor house itself, saving Commack taxpayers thousands of dollars each year; and
Pay annual rent (which will be used to help fund restoration efforts of the house).
Long Island University will partner with the Commack School District in the design of educational programs for students. For example:
• Field Trips:
o Each year, LIU agrees that groups of Commack students will visit the veterinary portion of the farm under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
o LIU agrees to work with an identified group of Commack teachers and curriculum specialists on the design of agriculturally related programs for students in grade levels specified by Commack staff. These programs will be age appropriate, hands-on and project-based where suitable.
Career and College Readiness Programs o LIU agrees to work in collaboration with Commack secondary school staff on the development of school to career programs, on-site exploration and on-site learning as well as internship programs for Commack students interested in agriculture, and related fields.
Finally, on the portion of the Property not leased by LIU, the Commack School District will collaborate with the Unkechaung Nation to bring programs of study to the District's students and community; work with local educators to plant, harvest and appropriately utilize vegetables indigenous to the Northeast; and work on student based programs that support sustainable energy production over time.
