Her Education and Life

Marion began her art studies at Bakersfield High School. Her teacher there was Mrs. Ruth Emerson. After high school, Marion went to Santa Barbara College. She earned a degree from Stanford University.

Marion continued to study art at other famous schools. These included the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute). She also studied at The Art Students League of New York.

Marion married another artist named Ben Cunningham. They later divorced.

Her Art and Style

In the 1930s, Marion Cunningham started making serigraphs. A serigraph is a type of printmaking, also known as screenprinting. It uses a stencil and mesh screen to transfer ink onto paper.

One of her favorite subjects to draw was cable car scenes. These are famous in San Francisco. She was a member of several art groups. These included the National Serigraph Society, the San Francisco Art Association, and the San Francisco Women Artists.

Her Legacy

Marion Cunningham passed away in 1948. After her death, her family helped create an art gallery. It was named the Cunningham Memorial Art Gallery in her honor. This gallery is now known as the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

Marion Cunningham's artwork is kept in many important museums. You can find her pieces at the National Gallery of Art and the Bakersfield Museum of Art.
