Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel (born June 10, 1873, died May 22, 1954) was a talented American artist. She was known for her beautiful paintings, especially landscapes. Marion often painted outdoors, a style called plein air. She used both watercolors and oil paints. She lived and worked with her husband, Elmer Wachtel, who was also an artist. They lived near Pasadena, California, in the early 1900s.

Early Life and Family

Marion Kavanagh was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her parents were James and Jean Jo Auston Kavanagh. Art ran in her family! Her mother, who was English, and her Irish grandfather were both painters too.

Marion studied art at the famous Art Institute of Chicago. She also learned from a well-known artist named William Merritt Chase in New York City. Later, she taught art in public schools and at the Art Institute of Chicago.

In 1903, Marion traveled to California. There, she continued her art studies with William Keith and Elmer Wachtel. She and Elmer Wachtel got married in 1904.

Painting California Landscapes

At first, Marion mainly painted people and portraits. But after moving to California, she started painting the amazing landscapes of the state. She also painted scenes from the Southwestern United States.

Her favorite way to paint was with watercolors. However, after her husband passed away, she began to use oil paints as well.

Marion was very involved in art groups in Southern California. She was part of the California Watercolor Society and the Pasadena Society of Artists. She also belonged to the California Art Club.

Art Exhibitions

In 2010, there was a special art show featuring Marion Wachtel's work. It also showed paintings by two other artists, Annie Harmon and Mary DeNeale Morgan. The exhibition was held at the Saint Mary's College of California Museum of Art. It displayed nearly 100 landscape paintings of California. All these paintings were made by artists who loved to paint outdoors.
