Mark Spain (born May 25, 1960 – died December 18, 2024) was an American journalist. He was well-known as a television news anchor. He worked on weekdays at WSET-TV in Lynchburg, Virginia. Before that, he was a news anchor in Jacksonville, Florida. He worked with Paige Kelton on a show called Action News. He anchored many evening news programs there.
Early Life and Education
Mark started his career very early. He delivered newspapers for The Cleveland Press. He was still in junior high school at that time. After finishing high school, he worked at WVIZ- Public TV. While working, he studied communications. He earned a BA degree from Cleveland State University.
Mark's Journalism Career
Before moving to Florida, Mark worked in the Cleveland area. He started as a news reporter for WEWS-TV. This was the local ABC channel. Later, he became a co-anchor at WJW-TV. This was the local Fox TV channel. He co-anchored the 5:00 pm news with Macie Jepson from 1996 to 2000. He also sometimes filled in as an anchor or reporter. He worked on the 10:00 PM weekday news and weekend broadcasts.
In 2000, Mark moved to Jacksonville, Florida. He first worked for First Coast News. There, he co-anchored First Coast News at 7. In 2007, he left that job. He then became an anchor for CBS 47 News at 6 and FOX 30 News at 10. These shows were on WTEV and WAWS. He took over from Russell Motley.
Later, these two channels combined into one brand called Action News. Mark was then promoted. He became the main anchor for all evening news shows. He worked alongside Paige Kelton. Mark Spain and Paige Kelton's last broadcasts were around September 1, 2014. After that, Mark became an anchor at WSET (TV) in Lynchburg, Virginia. He appeared on the 5:30 pm, 6 pm, and 11 pm weekday newscasts.
His Passing
Mark Spain passed away on December 18, 2024. He died from pancreatic cancer.
