This site is very important because it has two main types of natural areas. First, there's ancient woodland. This means the forest has been there for a very long time, possibly for hundreds of years. Second, there's species-rich unimproved grassland. This type of grassland has not been changed by farming or chemicals. It is full of many different kinds of wild flowers and grasses.
Trees and Plants
The ancient woodland at Marline Valley Woods is home to several types of trees. You can find tall pedunculate oak trees growing there. There are also areas where trees like European hornbeam, Common hazel, and Sweet Chestnut have been coppiced. Coppicing is an old way of managing trees. It involves cutting them back to the ground. This helps new shoots grow, providing wood and creating different habitats for wildlife.
The Valley Stream
A stream flows through a steep-sided valley within the woods. This stream and its damp surroundings create a perfect home for many small plants. Scientists have found 61 different kinds of mosses and liverworts here. Some of these tiny green plants are quite rare and hard to find in other places. Their presence shows how clean and healthy the environment is in the valley.
