Marlock facts for kids
A marlock or moort is a special type of Eucalyptus plant found in Western Australia. Think of them as a kind of small tree or a big bush. Unlike some other Eucalyptus plants called "mallees," a marlock has just one main stem, not many. It also doesn't have a special woody lump at its base called a lignotuber, which helps some plants regrow after a fire. Marlocks usually have lots of leaves that grow very close together, sometimes all the way down to the ground!

What Makes a Marlock Special?
Marlocks are unique because of their single stem and dense leaves. This makes them look different from other Eucalyptus trees. They are well-adapted to the dry conditions of Western Australia.
Different Kinds of Marlocks
There are many different types of marlocks, each with its own cool features. Here are some examples:
- Bald Island marlock (Eucalyptus conferruminata or Eucalyptus lehmannii)
- Black marlock, also called black-barked marlock (Eucalyptus redunca)
- Comet Vale marlock (Eucalyptus comitae-vallis)
- Flowering marlock, also known as long-flowered marlock or long-leaved marlock (Eucalyptus macrandra)
- Forrest's marlock (Eucalyptus forrestiana)
- Limestone marlock (Eucalyptus decipiens)
- Quoin Head marlock (Eucalyptus mcquoidii)
Understanding Moorts
Moorts are a specific kind of marlock. What makes them stand out is their bark, which is smooth and grey.
Types of Moorts
Just like marlocks, there are different kinds of moorts too:
- Moort or round-leaved moort (Eucalyptus platypus)
- Red-flowered moort (Eucalyptus nutans)
- Stoate's moort (Eucalyptus stoatei)
