Marshall's Store is a cool old building in Lawrence, Michigan. It's also known as DeHaven's Store. This historic building is located at 102 East St. Joseph Street.
It was recognized as a special Michigan State Historic Site in 1979. Later, in 2002, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important part of history!

The Store's Early Days
The story of Marshall's Store begins with Hannibal M. Marshall. He was born in Antwerp, New York in 1835. His family moved to Michigan when he was young.
Hannibal taught school for three years. Then, in 1859, he started working in a store in Hartford, Michigan. By the end of that year, he bought the store and became his own boss.
His business did very well. Because of his success, Marshall was able to build this large store in Lawrence in 1874. He owned the store for many years.
A Meeting Place for Groups
The third floor of Marshall's Store was special. Until 1902, it was used by groups like the Masons. These groups are called "fraternal organizations." They used the space for their meetings.
New Owners and a New Name
In 1906, a man named Levi C. DeHaven bought the store. DeHaven was born in 1852. He had already owned another store in Bangor, Michigan since 1871.
When DeHaven bought Marshall's Store, he changed its name. It became "DeHaven and Sons." He ran both the Lawrence and Bangor stores for many years.
The Store's Last Years
Levi DeHaven sold the Lawrence store in 1924. The new owner was Henry R. Phillips. Phillips kept the name "DeHaven's Store." He continued to run the store until he passed away in 1965.
After Phillips' death, the store closed its doors for good. For many years, it had been the main place in Lawrence to buy groceries and other goods. It was a very important part of the town.
The Store Today
The building was empty for a while after it closed. Then, in 1976, Kim Traverse bought it. From 1977 to 1983, the old DeHaven Store had a new life. It became home to the Whole Art Theatre Company.
Today, Marshall's Store is still standing strong. It's one of the best-preserved buildings in the area. It shows off a cool style of building called Italianate architecture. This style was popular a long time ago.
What Does the Store Look Like?
Marshall's Store is right in the middle of Lawrence village. It's the biggest and most eye-catching building there. It's made of red brick and has three stories.
The front of the building is five "bays" wide. A bay is like a section of the building. The first floor has three big display windows. There are also two doors for people to enter. You can still see "DEHAVENS STORE" painted right on the bricks above the entrance.
