A Bridge Through Time
The Martín Peña Bridge has a long and interesting history. The very first bridge in this spot was a simple stone causeway. It was likely built around the mid-1500s. A causeway is like a raised road or path built over water or wet ground.
Early Bridge Designs
Over time, the original stone causeway was improved. A wooden bridge was later built on top of it. This wooden bridge was then replaced by a brick structure in 1784. This brick bridge was designed by Juan Francisco Mestre.
Destruction and Rebuilding
In 1797, the British tried to invade Puerto Rico. During this event, known as the Battle of San Juan (1797), the British forces destroyed the brick bridge. After the invasion, the bridge was rebuilt in 1846. Engineer Santiago Cortijo designed this new version. It was about 220 feet (67 meters) long and 6 meters (20 feet) wide. This bridge had nine beautiful arches.
The Modern Bridge
The bridge you see today was built in 1939. It replaced the older structures and brought a modern Art Deco look to the area. This design was popular for buildings and bridges during that time.
How the Bridge Got Its Name
The name "Martín Peña" comes from a local fisherman. He used to work in a small bay near the bridge area. This is how the bridge got its unique name.
