Martha, Lady Giffard (born Martha Temple, 1639–1722) was an English writer. She wrote many letters and also biographies. Martha was a close helper to her brother, Sir William Temple. He helped create the Triple Alliance in 1668. This important agreement brought peace to England and its neighbors.

Martha Giffard's Early Life

Martha Giffard was born in 1638. Her parents were John Temple and Mary Hammond. Sadly, her mother passed away the same year Martha was born. She had two older brothers who lived to be adults, William and John. Martha was educated at home.

In February 1654, Martha was in Dublin, Ireland, with her brother William. That same year, William married Dorothy Osborne on Christmas Day. Their marriage lasted for many years, until 1695.

Martha's Marriage and Widowhood

On April 21, 1662, Martha married Sir Thomas Giffard. He was a royalist, meaning he supported the King. Sir Thomas was a baronet from Castlejordan, County Meath. Their marriage was very short. Sir Thomas died naturally on May 4, 1662, just a few weeks after they married. Martha chose not to marry again after his death.

Martha's Role in Diplomacy

Martha was involved in politics that supported the King. She traveled with her brother, William, who was a diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in talks with other countries. In 1667, they lived in Brussels.

Martha understood different languages. She traveled with William to important meetings in Amsterdam and The Hague. These meetings led to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1668. This treaty was supported by the Triple Alliance. Her brother, William, received credit for this alliance. It helped end a war and brought peace to England and its neighbors.

Later Life and Legacy

Martha Giffard passed away in 1722. In her will, she left money to Esther Johnson and Jonathon Swift's sister, Mrs. Fenton. Mrs. Fenton had been Martha's companion in 1711.

After her death, Martha's biography of her brother was published. It was called The life and character of Sir William Temple, Bart. The book came out in 1728. The author was listed as "a particular friend," but it was Martha who wrote it.
