Early Life and Modeling
Martha MacVicar was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her father worked as a car dealer. She started her career as a model. She even appeared on the covers of magazines. When she was 15, her family moved to Hollywood, California. This move happened because her father took over an agency in Burbank.
Film Career
Martha Vickers got her first small movie role in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943). At first, she played minor parts in films. She worked for Universal Studios and then RKO Pictures. Later, she moved to Warner Bros. Studio. There, they changed her last name to 'Vickers'. This was done to help her become a bigger star.
One of her most famous roles was in the movie The Big Sleep (1946). She also appeared in a musical called The Time, the Place and the Girl (1946). After that, she was in two comedies from Warner Bros. These were Love and Learn and That Way with Women (both 1947). In the 1950s, her film career slowed down.
Television Roles
Martha Vickers also appeared on television. In 1959, she was in an episode of Perry Mason. She played a character named Sheila Hayes. Her last two acting jobs were in 1960. These were on the TV show The Rebel.
Personal Life
Martha Vickers was married three times. Her first husband was A.C. Lyles. They were married for a short time in 1948. Her second husband was the actor Mickey Rooney. They were married from 1949 to 1951. Her third husband was actor Manuel Rojas. They were married from 1954 to 1965. All of her marriages ended in divorce. Martha Vickers had one son with Mickey Rooney. She also had two daughters with Manuel Rojas.
Later Life and Death
Martha Vickers passed away on November 2, 1971. She was 46 years old. She died from esophageal cancer in Los Angeles, California. She is buried in Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery. This cemetery is in North Hollywood, California.
