Marthe Niel (born December 29, 1878 – died November 18, 1928) was a brave French pilot. She made history by becoming the second woman in the whole world to get an aeroplane pilot's license. This amazing achievement happened on September 19, 1910.
Early Life
Marthe Niel was born Marie-Ange Denieul. Her birthday was December 29, 1878. She grew up in a small village called Le Cannée. This village is part of Paimpont in Ille-et-Vilaine, France. Her father, Joachim Denieul, worked on a farm. Her mother was Marie-Joseph Saget. Marthe worked as a cook for some time.
Becoming a Pilot
In April 1910, Marthe Niel decided to follow her dream. She joined a special school for pilots. This school was started by a famous aeroplane builder. His name was Paul Koechlin. The school was located in Mourmelon-le-Grand, France.
Marthe worked very hard at the school. She learned how to fly a Koechlin monoplane. A monoplane is an aeroplane with only one set of wings.
On September 19, 1910, Marthe Niel passed her flying test. She received her official pilot's license. It was license number 226 from the Aéro-Club de France. This made her the second woman ever to earn a pilot's license in the world!
